But it wasn’t always like this…

When I started out hiring seemed pretty simple. Post a job on a site like Upwork (it was oDesk back when I started back in 2011), get a bunch of applications, pick the best one and start to scale…Only it never worked out like that. My first hiring attempts were a disaster.

I found out that it’s easy to post a job on the various freelancer sites but that’s where the problems began.

I was overwhelmed by a tsunami of low quality applications. I was spent days and days just trying to find quick ways to filter and sift through my now rammed inbox.

Never mind searching for a needle in a haystack, this felt like searching for a needle in a pin factory…I found it impossible to tell the good candidates from the bad. How could I vet 100s of applicants for something as simple as a customer service role? 

And what about the more technical or demanding positions

I didn’t know how to weed out the fake histories from the good; to tell who genuinely could do the job versus those who were just applying for everything, each time with a brand new fictitious resume...

And when I did decide to take on a team member the problems just multiplied!

First I was buried by todo lists, then Trello tasks, training calls, writing and amending SOPs... The project admin that seemed to go on forever and that was before I began doing my own tasks. 

Then when I did manage to assigned work it often didn’t get done, or worse tasks would be so badly performed I’d end up redoing the whole thing.  

Jobs were left incomplete, shipments were delayed, stock orders misplaced or badly executed, and my customers got annoyed, venting their frustrations in low star reviews.

Freelancers I’d hired would ghost me or even disappear completely, ditching me for the next higher paying gig that came along. 

At one point I could literally see my dream business evaporating before my eyes. 

I read every book, blog post and medium article I could find, trying to find the magic formula for hiring the right people and building teams but nothing seemed to work...

There had to be a better way.
